The Spider Project


The strong, flexible silk from the Nephila is used... by the natives of Papua...The enormous webs of these spiders are abundant in the forest and are a readily available source of silk.

Long bamboo poles are bent over into a loop and are erected where the webs occur most densely in the forest. A frame of this shape is particularly suitable for the spider, which obligingly spins its web across it, thereby constructing an instant fishing net, which is dipped into the river... 31
